BP Sainsbury's dispute settled: A victory for common
sense
3 December 2009
Unite, Britain's biggest union can confirm that it has reached
an agreement meaning BP tanker drivers who deliver fuel to
Sainbury's supermarkets have withdrawn their decision to hold
industrial action.
The agreement reached between Unite, the employer Turners and
the supplier Greenergy means that the union will maintain its
current national bargaining structure along with its national
agreement covering workers' terms and conditions. Turners have also
given a clear commitment to work with the union on other
outstanding issues.
The drivers were concerned that the companies' original plans
would have destroyed long-standing negotiating structures, hinder
Unite’s ability to represent its members which would eventually see
their wages decline.
Ron Webb, Unite national officer for the logistics sector said:
"This is a victory for common sense. I would like to acknowledge
the responsible position taken by Turners and the supplier
Greenergy in bringing about a successful conclusion to this
dispute. I also want to recognise the key contribution played by
the union's shop stewards and members. This deal is proof that
Unite the union will in every case move swiftly to protect its
national agreements and negotiating rights."
