89 Glasgow manufacturing jobs lost in another blow to Scottish
manufacturing
Unite has confirmed the impending loss of 89 skilled
manufacturing jobs following the collapse of talks to maintain
employment at the Flexible Ducting Plant in Milngavie, near
Glasgow.
The plant manufactures hose-pipe components for Dyson Hoovers
with its workers employed across a range of skilled manual and
professional occupations.
Unite, Scotland’s largest trade union, had been notified late
last year that the plant no longer had a future and was to close
following the relocation of a key client to a low-cost site in
Malaysia, which accounted for 50 per cent of the plant’s
turnover.
Unite had presented an alternative business plan to the
company’s US-based management, which proposed sustaining a
significant proportion of jobs, but a compromise could not be
reached.
Unite regional officer, Tony Devlin, said: “We’ve worked
extremely hard to put together a viable business plan that would
save jobs and production at the Milngavie plant.
"Regrettably, it was not to be as a deal could not be reached
with management despite our best efforts. Our members have now
accepted an enhanced redundancy package and we will provide all
possible assistance to help them back into employment.
"However, there can be no doubt this is another hammer blow for
skilled manufacturing jobs in Scotland.”
The plant will close by summer 2009 with a phased reduction of
staff over this timescale.
