Unite to donate substantial amount to asbestos charity
13 November 2008
Unite, Britain’s biggest union is to donate £1,000 to the
Derbyshire Asbestos Support team (DAST) on Friday 14th November at
Grafton House, Lincolnshire.
Unite have thousands of workers who in the course of their
careers have come into contact with asbestos products. There is
also the danger that it may be related to illnesses in the future,
as conditions caused by contact with the material can take thirty
or more years to become apparent.
DAST offers a free confidential advice service to anyone with an
asbestos related disease and their families. They provide brilliant
help and support with Unite member’s benefit claims as well as
advice on pursuing civil claims using specialist solicitors who
have a long history of links with the trade union movement.
In the meantime, Unite have constructed a register for members
to enter details of their work history and possible contact with
asbestos which can be extremely useful if compensation claims need
to be made.
Nev Jackson, former Unite regional secretary said: "I am
delighted to be able to present DAST with our donation of £1,000. I
am very conscious of the issues of asbestos related diseases in
this field and the extremities of it’s affects on people.
"Plenty of industries in the area either deal with or have dealt
with asbestos products in the past, so this has become a real
issue.
"People at DAST are experienced and know what they are talking
about. Our members couldn’t be in better hands."
Unite welcomes the founding of a support group for those
affected by asbestos related diseases in Lincolnshire, and will
stand shoulder to shoulder with the charity providing the
assistance it may need.
