Unite suspends industrial action at Hibernian after talks
breakthrough
29 July 2008
Industrial action at Hibernian has been
suspended this afternoon following a breakthrough in talks between
officials of the trade union Unite and management at the insurance
firm.
Two weeks ago staff voted overwhelmingly in
support of industrial action to oppose a company proposal to move
580 jobs to Bangalore in India. Work stoppages had been
expected to start within the next ten days.
Today’s breakthrough will allow meaningful
talks to take place around meeting the cost challenges faced by
Hibernian and seeking to maximise the number of sustainable jobs
retained by Hibernian in Ireland.
“Both sides have taken the decision to
redirect their efforts towards finding an agreement,” said Unite
National Officer Jerry Shanahan following meetings at Hibernian
which took place last week and today. “We have given each
other an opportunity to look at the issues from a joint perspective
and to see what is possible to achieve for the long term benefit of
our members, the company and its customers.”
Talks will commence tomorrow, Wednesday July
30.
