Unite comment on the MoD’s decision to build new carriers
in the UK
Tuesday, 20th May 2008
Bernie Hamilton, Unite National Officer,
said:
“This is a very positive step for
British manufacturing and the country’s skilled workers. This
announcement will safeguard over 10,000 essential jobs and
skills.
“This is excellent news for the highly
skilled Unite members within the British shipbuilding industry,
giving them the opportunity to pass on their skills to the next
generation of shipbuilders, through apprenticeships. It also gives
the companies a solid foundation to pursue commercial work to
ensure that the UK shipbuilding industry survives after these
carriers.
“Building these state of the art
vessels will demonstrate the great job UK workers can do and what
can be achieved when government, industry and the trade unions work
together to get the best value for the tax payer.”
