Mass meeting for Enterprise workers to decide on action to fight potential job cuts

8 October 2008

Unite, the UK’s largest trade union, will tomorrow (Thursday 9th October, 2008) be holding a mass meeting for its members who work at Enterprise in Liverpool to discuss possible action to fight 300 job cuts at the site in Aintree.

Enterprise Liverpool, which is a joint venture between Enterprise plc (80%) and Liverpool City Council (20%), has issued an HR1 form giving notice of the potential redundancies that will hit over 300 jobs at the site. Workers at Enterprise are angry that Liverpool Mutual Homes, the new owners and landlords of the ex-Liverpool City Council stock, have rejected its bid for the housing association’s repair and maintenance contract of 15,000 social houses previously undertaken by the Enterprise Liverpool workforce.

The mass meeting which takes place on Thursday 9th October is expected to look at possible action in defence of the their jobs.

Unite Regional Officer, Tony Hayes said: "Unite members at the Enterprise site in Aintree are extremely angry at the way the redundancy situation has been handled and believe that TUPE should apply in this situation to ensure pay and conditions do not come under attack.

"There is a lot of anger and distress among this loyal workforce who have been carrying out the repairs and maintenance service of Liverpool City Council properties for over 40 years and now face uncertain months ahead.

"The mass meeting of all unions will be members' opportunity to say what action they are prepared to take in defence of these jobs."

Unite is calling for meaningful talks between Enterprise Liverpool, Liverpool Mutual Homes, Liverpool City Council and trade unions to protect the future of the workforce.
