Amicus seeks assurances over the future of NAG

8 June 2006

Amicus Britain's biggest private sector union will today (08/07/06) meet with John Stewart the group CEO and Managing Director of National Australia Bank (NAB) in Glasgow to demand assurances that NAG Europe will not be sold off and jobs will be protected.

There are 8,500 members of staff working for the bank in the UK. There has been a lot of speculation about a possible bid from organisations like Santander for NAG.

Amicus would be hugely disappointed if the hard work and pain endured by the staff as a result of cost cutting and significant redundancies was in order to streamline the company in preparation for a bid from another bank.

Amicus will be expecting that the staff remaining at NAG will have their jobs, terms and conditions and pensions protected and they will not be sacrificed for the sake of short term shareholder value.

Amicus National Officer, Mary Alexander says: "We will be asking John Stewart the group CEO and Managing Director of National Australia for assurances that NAG Europe will not be sold off. Amicus union would be hugely disappointed if the hard work and pain endured by the staff as a result of cost cutting and significant redundancies was in order to streamline the company in preparation for a bid from another bank."
