Amicus launches new booklet for lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender members at Euro-Pride 2006
27 June 2006
Amicus the union is celebrating
Euro-pride today (Saturday 1 July) with a launch of a new booklet
for its LGBT members. The new booklet ‘Equality is at the heart of
Amicus’ offers advice on how members can get active in the union’s
LGBT network and follows the recent publication of the unions’
negotiators guide to combat homophobia.
The Amicus negotiators guide advises representatives on how to
work with employers and workers to combat homophobia and promote
equality in the workplace and that employers are complying with the
legislation that impacts on LGBT workers.
Amicus head of equality Siobhan Endean said: “Although the law
concerning sexuality has changed, one in five lesbian and gay
workers still feel unable to reveal their sexual orientation at
work. Amicus is campaigning to ensure everyone is given respect and
dignity.”
Amicus has a proud history of championing LGBT rights and is
happy to be a sponsor of Euro-pride 2006.
“By sponsoring today’s event in London and the other regional
Pride events in the UK Amicus is sending a powerful message that
trade unions are campaigning against homophobia and we support
diversity and promote tolerance and mutual respect in the
workplace.”
One of the commonest problems faced by LGBT workers is
bullying and harassment. Homophobic ‘jokes’ are commonplace at work
and transgender workers can face similar kinds of abusive behavior.
This treatment is dehumanising, devaluing and can lead to stress
and illness. Discrimination can also include not being appointed to
jobs; unfair work allocation or over-supervision; and not being
considered for promotion or training.
