Slips and trips account for over a third of all reported major injuries – 11,000 every year - and are the most common cause of workplace injuries. 95% of those injuries involve fractures of arms, wrists and ankles. Slips and trips are often a contributory factor in other serious accidents, such as those involving machinery, scalding and falls from height.

Slips and trips are the most common hazard faced by Unite members, and the Industry sectors with highest number of slip & trip major injuries are sectors with significant Unite membership, including construction, manufacturing, food manufacturing, public services, health and social care, post, and road transporation and storage.

Some reps will have access to digital cameras, which can be used to photograph and record slips and trips problems in the workplace, but mapping offers an additional way of identifying the problem. Slips and Trips Mapping is a tool that safety reps can use to involve members in identifying problems and hazards in the workplace using their knowledge and experience. Unite has produced a slips and trips mapping tool  (pdf, 882KB)pdf, which can be downloaded here. It is also available from Unite regional offices.
