Unite safety rep credentials
Are you a new rep or a safety rep without a safety rep card? If
so, read on…
It's a well established
fact that unionised workplaces with active safety reps are
safer workplaces. Safety reps have considerable
rights to carry out their functions. Full details can be found
in Safety
representatives and safety committees, also known as the
Brown Book,
which can be downloaded here, or
ordered in print by emailing Ray Cawley or calling him
on 020 7780 4014. Make sure you have a copy and know what it says
about safety reps and safety committees.

If you become an Unite safety rep, written notification must be
given to your employer stating:
The name of the representative's)
The group of employees represented
So inform your Regional Office of
your appointment. They will write to your employer for you and give
you credentials in the form of a safety rep card,
Then:
make sure you enrol on one of our
safety training courses, for which your employer is obliged to
give you paid release.

make contact with your local HSE Inspector, contact details for
which can be found here, or with your local
authority Environmental Health Inspector, depending on whether your
employer is covered by the HSE or local authority inspections. If
you are not sure, check your workplace Health and
Safety Law Poster. Employers have a legal duty to display this
poster in a prominent position in each workplace, and if you cannot
find your one, remind your employer of their
obligation.
