As the European Community continues to expand, worker mobility increases and migrant workers are becoming a larger part of the workforce. As well as the problems associated with not speaking English as a first language (or at all), many are employed illegally by unscrupulous employers that exploit the lack of knowledge of and ability to assert employment rights. Such issues mean migrant workers are often at a disadvantage in terms of their health and safety protection.

To address this issue the TUC has produced a guide entitled Safety & Migrant Workers: A practical guide for safety representatives. The guide gives advice on how safety reps can work with migrant workers to help ensure their health and safety is protected. A Unite-branded version of this guide is available in print by contacting Ray Cawley on 020 7611 2535.
