Union takes migrant worker fight to Tesco AGM - article from the Guardian, 30 June 2009

Unite, Britain’s biggest trade union, believes it’s time to lift the lid on the evidence about the treatment of workers employed by companies in the British and Irish meat supply industry that supplies Tesco stores. In many cases a permanent two-tier workforce has been created, one where mainly migrant agency workers are on even lower pay and worse conditions than the directly employed workers. In some cases the exploitation of workers is shocking.

Unite the union gave its evidence to Tesco and other major retailers more than a year ago. Despite talks and independent research which backed the workers’ claims, Tesco has failed to take effective action by insisting that the meat supply industry stops exploiting its workforce.

We are calling on Tesco to value its supply chain because every worker counts. Unite believes supermarkets should face up to their responsibilities to workers employed by companies in the British and Irish meat supply industry.

Mr Leahy, Not everyone is in as fortunate a position as you. These workers in question are a prime example. When I say "these workers" I'm talking about these exploited, underpaid, undervalued workers who, despite being exploited, underpaid and undervalued, you still rely on to provide you with meat to sell. Surely if you value the meat, or more precisely, enjoy lining your pockets with the profits from the meat these workers provide you with, then why not do something about the workers conditions who put you in the fortunate position I mentioned a minute ago? Or do you not have that power? In which case, pass on this message to a man of action who WILL get something done!
