Protecting pay
Back in October 2009, Unite, along with other trade unions,
submitted a pay claim of 2.5 per cent or £500 whichever was the
greater. The Tory-led Local Government Employers refused to
negotiate, instead the Local Government Employers imposed a
two-year pay freeze – a real terms pay cut - on all local
government workers. The Local Government Employers have since
refused to revisit its decision, despite the coalition government’s
announcement that public sector workers earning less than £21,000 a
year would not be subject to a pay freeze.
