Saving jobs at Cambridge University Press
Stop press - More than
100 jobs saved: Cambridge University Press announces fewer
redundancies
Cambridge University Press has confirmed that 48 members of
staff from their printing department are to be made redundant, and
a further 25 redeployed to other parts of the business. The number
of redundancies, though still high, is far lower than had
originally been feared. It is expected that 72 jobs will initially
be retained in printing.
Unite fights back over Cambridge University Press
job cuts
Plans to axe more than 150 jobs at the world-famous Cambridge
University Press (CUP) are being fiercely resisted by
Unite.
Proposals by the profitable CUP to cuts the jobs in its printing
division and the publishing education group have been described by
Unite as ‘an irredeemable stain on Cambridge University’s
reputation as its celebrates its 800th anniversary’.
Unite pinpoints poor management decisions for the present
crisis, in particular the loss of the five-year £50 million
Cambridge Assessment contract.
Unite/GPMU national officer, Ann Field said: "It is wrong that
dedicated professional and skilled employees working for a
profitable organisation with an annual turn-over of £179 million
should pay with their jobs because of managerial incompetence."
Unite says these jobs can be saved!
CUP is profitable, the workforce is dedicated, and the business
is out there. There is no reason to lose these jobs. Unite is
calling for the plans to axe these jobs to be rescinded
immediately.
How can you help?
