Manufacturing: Science: Finance (MSF)
In 1988 TASS and the Association of Scientific, Technical & Managerial Staffs (ASTMS) agreed to merge forming the Manufacturing: Science: Finance (MSF) union. In 2002 union history turned a full circle when MSF merged with the AEEU to form Amicus.

Association of Scientific, Technical & Managerial Staffs (ASTMS)
The Association of Scientific, Technical & Managerial Staffs (ASTMS) was formed in 1968 when the Association of Supervisory Staffs, Executives & Technicians (ASSET) merged with the Association of Scientific Workers (AScW) creating a union of 90,000 members. By 1980 as a result of active recruitment and encouraging smaller unions to merge the association had grown to a membership of over 400,000. In 1988 the association joined with TASS to create MSF.

Association of Scientific Workers (AScW)
The Association of Scientific Workers (AScW) was originally the National Union of Scientific Workers when it was founded in 1918 and changed its name in 1925. The union membership remained small until it decided to accept unqualified staff into membership during World War Two. It had a membership of 22,000 in the 1960s and merged with the Association of Supervisory Staffs, Executives and Technicians (ASSET) in 1968 to form ASTMS.

Originally formed in 1917 as the National Foremen’s Association (NFA) the Association of Supervisory Staffs, Executives & Technicians (ASSET) made history when it became the first union to present a Private Members Bill in Parliament becoming Law. The union merged with the Association of Scientific Workers (AScW) in 1968 forming the Association of Scientific, Technical & Managerial Staffs (ASTMS)

Amalgamated Managers’ & Foremen’s Association
Founded in Darlington in 1917 the Amalgamated Managers’ & Foremen’s Association had a short life and merged with the National Foremen’s Association (NFA) in 1925.

Medical Practitioners’ Union (MPU)
The Medical Practitioners’ Union (MPU) was founded in 1896 as the Incorporated Medical Practitioners’ Association (IPMA) and became the MPU in 1914. The union affiliated to the TUC in 1937 and in 1970 its 5,520 members became a section of ASTMS.
