Expansion into Constructional Engineering & White Collar
Sectors
Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers
(AUEW)
Formed in 1970 the Amalgamated Union of
Engineering Workers (AUEW) came about as a result of a merger
between the Amalgamated Union of Engineering & Foundry Workers
(AEF), the Draughtsmen & Allied Technicians Association (DATA)
and the Constructional Engineering Union (CEU) creating a union
with a total membership of 1.4 million members. Four Sections were
created, Engineering, Foundry, Construction, and Technical &
Supervisory with each section retaining its own organisation
structure.

Draughtsmen & Allied Technicians
Association (DATA) & AESD
The Draughtsmen & Allied Technicians Association (DATA)
began its life in 1913 on Clydeside when its forebear the
Association of Engineering & Shipbuilding Draughtsmen (AESD)
was formed. The union grew quickly and by 1917 when it moved its
headquarters to London it had a membership of more than 10,000. The
union affiliated to the TUC in 1918 and to the Confederation of
Shipbuilding & Engineering Unions in 1943. The Association
changed its name to DATA in 1961 and was one of the three unions
which formed the AUEW in 1970 becoming the Technical,
Administrative & Supervisory Section (TASS) of the union.

Constructional Engineering Union
(CEU)
Formed in 1924 from previous members of the British Iron, Steel
& Kindred Trades Association with the agreement of that union
the Constructional Engineering Union (CEU) catered for a variety of
trades in engineering construction. It joined with the AEU and DATA
in 1970 to form the AUEW.
